What You NeedTo publish web pages to your web server, you need to know your account
information on Parker. (Parker is the name of the web server which services
all of the College of Geosciences.) You want to know your directory location,
username and password. If you haven't been provided with this info, please
contact your web administrator. Your Web AddressYour web address (also known as a URL) will almost always be at the following location, despite your classification: http://geosciences.ou.edu/~username Where "username" is your actual log-on username in lowercase letters. Index (Home) PageYour home page should be named either index.html or index.htm so that internet browsers will automatically load it when someone looks at your main directory. Download WS_FTP LETo download the program itself, perform a search at one the following software download sites. The proper name for this program is WS_FTP.
PublishingSession PropertiesThe Session Profile screen will pop up first when you open WS_FTP. Fill in the fields with the address for Parker and your own personal log in information [Figure 1]. Then click on OK. It may take a little while for the program to connect with the server.
If your cursor shows an hour glass, or the status window at the bottom
of WS_FTP says it is still connecting, give it a minute to establish its
connection. UploadingAfter the program connects to the server, you should see two columns. The column on the left (Local System) represents the files and directories on your own computer. The column on the right (Remote System) contains the files and directories inside your web directory on Parker. Use the green up arrow at the top of each column to move up your directory structure to find the folder with your web files. Double-click a directory folder to open it. To upload a file, select / highlight it in the left-hand column (Local
System) and either drag-n-drop it into the right column (Remote System),
or click on the right-arrow button located between the two columns. DownloadingTo download a file, select / highlight it in the right-hand column (Remote System) and either drag-n-drop it into the left column (Local System), or click on the left-arrow button located between the two columns. Creating DirectoriesTo create a directory in either the Local System or the Remote System,
first make sure you are already in the directory in which you want a new
folder created. Then simply click on the MkDir button located on the appropriate
side, type in the name of the new directory, and click on OK. Deleting FilesTo delete a file, select the file you wish to delete and the Delete button will become an option in the button list. Click on Delete, then confirm your selection. Links for Stuff OnlineHere are some links to basic information, software, links, images, etc.
