Netscape E-Mail Tech Guide

What You Need

To set up your e-mail in Netscape, you will need to know your e-mail address, the incoming and outgoing mail servers, your username, and password.

Your E-Mail Address

Your e-mail address will be in the following format:

username@gcn.ou.edu [or]
username@ou.edu

Where "username" is your actual log-on username in lowercase letters.

The e-mail domain (the @ou.edu part) will depend on whether you use your primary OU alias, or the specific address on Hoth. If unsure, please contact us.

Download Netscape

To download the program itself, try one of the following sites. The proper name for this program is Netscape Communicator. We recommend downloading version 4.7 or higher.

Your Identity

Begin the configuration by opening Netscape Navigator, then Netscape Messenger.

  1. Click on Edit in the Main Menu, then select Preferences. On the left hand of the Preferences window is a category listing. Click on Identity under Mail and News Groups. (If you can't see Identity, expand the menu by clicking on the + next to the category title.)
  2. Fill in as much information here as you would like. You need to have a name and e-mail address, at least.

Mail Servers

Next, set up mail server information in the Mail Servers Window by clicking on the Mail Servers title underneath Identity.

  1. Add an Incoming Mail Server by clicking on the Add button next to the blank field.
  2. For Server Name, type in gcn.ou.edu (for Hoth accounts), or pop.ou.edu (for OU POP accounts).
  3. Server Type is POP3 Server.
  4. Username is your personal username.
  5. If you would like Netscape to remember your password so you don't have to enter it every time, click on the Remember Password checkbox.
  6. You can also have Netscape check for mail at timed intervals, and automatically download new mail.

Check E-Mail

Once you have set up your Identity and Mail Server information, you can check your e-mail. Go to Netscape Messenger (click on Communicator in the Main Menu, then select Messenger). Click on the Get Messages icon, or click on File - Get New Messages. New messages will be downloaded into your Inbox.

Send Message

To send a new message, click on the Send Message button, or click on Messages - Send New Message. Enter the recipient's e-mail address in the To: field. Enter the subject of the message in the Subject: field. Enter the main body of your message in the large blank space at the bottom of the window. When you are finished, click on the Send Message button, or click on File - Send Now.
